After having practiced law at the national law firms of Shearman & Sterling in New York and Bingham McCutchen LLP (f/k/a Bingham Dana LLP) in Boston, both of which engaged in large international and commercial law practices, Attorney Finneran founded the law firm of Finneran & Nicholson, P.C. in 1984. We are fortunate to be able to use her as an invaluable resource, from time to time. She has considerable experience in: contract, analysis, negotiation and drafting; the areas of securities law, investment adviser regulation, financial planning regulation; business formation, whether sole proprietors, partnerships, corporations or limited liability companies (including risk management analysis and risk avoidance); business operation matters, from structuring the relationship among owners (shareholders and members rights and obligations) to avoiding and resolving customer, employment and contract disputes; as well as, business restructurings; corporate governance, business transactions; shareholder disputes; representing officers and directors; e-commerce; and employment law. In these fields, she has both published articles and has been a panelist for the American Law Institute, the American Bar Association and the Massachusetts Bar Association.
During the course of her practice, Attorney Finneran represented both domestic and international businesses engaged in a variety of activities, including among others manufacturing, sales, consulting, management, real estate, development, real estate brokers and financial services. She is committed to not only getting the task done, but also doing so with a risk/cost benefit analysis so as to enable the client to make informed decisions as to which action(s) or inaction(s) to take. Each legal task is undertaken applying the Firm's motto bringing to each client task 21st Century Strategies with Old World Commitment.
Attorney Finneran is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and New York, the Federal District Court of Massachusetts, the First Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
