Attorney Information
Overview
Attorney Nancy Baskin brings over thirty-five years of experience in the field of family law to her clients' cases. She graduated from Dartmouth College cum laude in 1981 and, after spending a year working for the United States Senate, attended New York University School of Law, from which she received her J.D. in 1985. While at law school, Ms. Baskin served as a member of the editorial staff and then an editor of the New York University Law Review. She is the author of an article entitled "Widgery v. United States: Probable Acquittal," 59 New York University Law Review 1285, 1984. After two years of practicing commercial real estate in a large law firm in Manhattan, Ms. Baskin began exclusively practicing domestic relations law in 1988, first at the premier Manhattan divorce law firm now known as Aronson, Mayefsky & Sloan, LLP for approximately five years and then, upon relocating to Boston in 1993, with a well-respected Boston domestic relations firm for five years. After practicing in the domestic relations department of a large law firm for over two years, Ms. Baskin opened her own practice in Boston in 2001. Ms. Baskin's firm has since grown to four attorneys, all exclusively practicing domestic relations law. She is widely regarded as a preeminent practitioner in the field of family law.
Ms. Baskin has been appointed by the Massachusetts Probate and Family Court as a Discovery Master and as a Guardian ad Litem and is a volunteer for the Probate and Family Court Lawyer for the Day program. She is trained in collaborative law, and practices both litigation and mediation. She has served as a mediator and a conciliator in divorce cases, including at the request of other Boston family law attorneys. Ms. Baskin is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, New York, and Connecticut and is a member of the Women's Bar Association and of the Family Law Sections of the Boston Bar Association, Massachusetts Bar Association, and American Bar Association.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
