Attorney Information

Overview

“It is my privilege as a Plymouth County criminal defense attorney to represent people against the incredible power of the government and its overreach. The United States Constitution and the Massachusetts Declaration of Rights guarantee those charged with criminal offenses the right to a lawyer and that is what I do – advocate for people in bad situations and fight against overreach by the government.”

Ryan Matthews grew up outside of Detroit, Michigan and has lived the majority of his life in Massachusetts – particularly Plymouth County. After graduating with honors from New England Law Boston (formerly New England School of Law), Attorney Matthews immediately began practicing law in a litigation capacity. Though developing an early fascination with criminal defense during law school, the practice was founded on representing injured parties against the interest of the insurance companies.

After approximately ten years developing a strong reputation as a civil litigator, Attorney Matthews founded his own firm and focused exclusively on defending the rights of the criminally accused. For the last twelve years, he has represented hundreds of accused criminal defendants against a variety of allegations. “I represent people during all stages of the criminal process in Massachusetts courts from the investigatory stage through post-conviction relief motions and post-conviction collateral proceedings. I have tried dozens of jury trials, hundreds of bench trials and litigated hundreds of evidentiary motions to suppress and/or exclude evidence.”

When you are facing criminal charges, the decision of which lawyer to hire should be based on who makes you feel comfortable, who has experience and type of practice they run. “I am happy to discuss with you in detail my experience regarding any of the charges you are facing, what I would do and what I have done, along with what areas I have succeeded at in your type of case.”

The Law Office of Ryan J. Matthews recognizes that the situation you are facing – whether you are the subject of investigation or you have already been charged with / convicted of a crime – is the most pressing matter in your life. Being the focus of an investigation or criminally charged affects every aspect of your day to day existence and weighs heavily on your future plans. “I take each case personally because that is what you need in these circumstances. In my prior life as a personal injury plaintiff’s attorney, I participated in a high volume practice. I refuse to do that in the field of criminal defense because the stakes are so high. I focus on individual defenses and individual rights”.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
