Overview

Lucy J. Budman, Certified Elder Law Attorney

Attorney Lucy J. Budman is a Tax and Estate Planning specialist with a Masters of Law in Taxation (LL.M.). Lucy excels at guiding clients and their families through the maze of financial and legal decisions necessary for effective Estate Planning.

Lucy earned her undergraduate degree from Binghamton University in New York. Thereafter, she graduated cum laude from the Boston University School of Law in 2003, one of the top law schools in the country. In 2011, Lucy earned her Masters of Law in Taxation (LL.M.) at Boston University School of Law. Lucy was admitted to the Bar in Massachusetts (2003) and New York (2005).

Lucy is among approximately two dozen Certified Elder Law Attorneys* in Massachusetts. She earned this distinction by completing a process that requires years of focused Elder Law and Estate Planning practice, a full-day Bar-style Exam, extensive continuing legal education, and multiple peer references from other expert Elder Law and Estate Planning Attorneys.

Lucy has been selected for inclusion to Massachusetts Super Lawyers as a Rising Star since 2012. Selections are made by Super Lawyers based upon peer nominations and research, comprehensive evaluation, and further peer review within the Attorney's primary area of practice.

As an LL.M. (Legum Magistra) with a Masters of Law in the area of Taxation, Lucy is one of the few attorneys across the Commonwealth with this prestigious distinction. She takes great pride in serving clients by strategically employing tax code provisions to optimize tax planning benefits during their lifetime and to minimize or eliminate Estate Taxes upon their death.

Lucy is an active member of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (Mass. NAELA), a distinguished organization of more than 500 Massachusetts attorneys focused on improving the lives of seniors and disabled individuals. Lucy is a member of the leading local and national Elder Law and Estate Planning associations including National NAELA, Wealth Counsel (a national organization of Trust and Estate Attorneys who design sophisticated planning techniques), and Elder Counsel (a national organization of Medicaid and Asset Protection Planning Attorneys). She frequently participates in national and local conferences with the leading attorneys in the country.

Because of her recognized expertise, Lucy is a frequent speaker, writer and television commentator on Elder Law and Estate Planning topics.

Lucy is fluent in Russian. In her free time, Lucy is an avid reader and writer – especially of historical fiction. Lucy resides in Boston with her spouse and their cat, Eloise.

*The National Elder Law Foundation (NELF) is the only national organization accredited by the American Bar Association to certify attorneys in Elder Law. NELF is a private organization, whose standards for certification are not regulated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
