Overview
Patrick G. Curley, Certified Elder Law Attorney
Attorney Patrick G. Curley is an Elder Law and Asset Protection Specialist. He focuses his practice on protecting clients' families, homes, savings, and independence – whether planning in advance or in a crisis.
After graduating as Valedictorian from Wakefield Memorial High School, Patrick earned his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and his law degree in 1997 from the University of Michigan Law School, which is among the top 10 law schools in the country.
Patrick leads Curley Law Firm LLP, one of the premier Estate Planning and Elder Law firms in Massachusetts. Under Patrick's leadership, the firm has grown to include multiple Attorneys and professional staff – with decades of experience in Estate Planning and Elder Law.
One of just 26 Certified Elder Law Attorneys* (CELAs) in Massachusetts, Patrick earned this prestigious distinction in 2008 by focusing his practice exclusively on Elder Law and Estate Planning, passing a notoriously difficult full-day national Bar-style Exam, taking dozens of hours of continuing legal education, and securing multiple peer references from other expert Elder Law and Estate Planning Attorneys. To maintain his certification, he participates in dozens of hours of continuing legal education every year, and undergoes a strict recertification review by the National Elder Law Foundation (NELF) every five years. Patrick has been selected for inclusion to MassachusettsSuper Lawyers® since 2011. Selections are made by Super Lawyers® based upon peer nominations and research, comprehensive evaluation, and further peer review within the attorney’s primary area of practice. Patrick served 13 years on the Board ofDirectors of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (MassNAELA). This distinguished organization of more than 400 Elder Law and Special Needs attorneys focuses on improving the lives of older adults and individuals living with special needs. At the request of the Massachusetts Bar Association, Patrick has served as a contributing author of the MassHealth chapter of the annual “Elder Law Education Program” publication each year since 2016.
Patrick is Chair of the Board of Directors of the Accelerated Cure Project, an internationally-recognized non-profit that accelerates research to find better treatments and a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. An Eagle Scout himself, Patrick serves a Scoutmaster of Lynnfield Troop 48 where his son is now a Life Scout. Patrick resides locally with his wife, Erin, who has taught 1st grade in the Brookline public schools and special education in the Reading public schools, and with their children, Alan and Hannah.
*The National Elder Law Foundation (NELF) is the only national organization accredited by the American Bar Association to certify attorneys in Elder Law. NELF is a private organization, whose standards for certification are not regulated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
