Attorney Information

Overview

“I represented doctors, hospitals and insurance companies for 15 years with a heavy heart for the patients and their families that were so often my adversaries. After watching and being appalled at how the insurance side works in some instances in 2017, I began representing victims of medical malpractice and their families. It was the best professional decision I have ever made, and bringing my unique defense background to the patient’s side has been an asset for my clients.”

Bart Paul O’Neill has more than 22 years of experience as a litigator, starting his law career representing physicians, hospitals and insurance companies. This defense background has given him a unique perspective representing victims of medical malpractice and personal injury.

O’Neill joined McKeen & Associates in 2022. He graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy with a bachelor’s degree in political science and certification in business administration. He is a graduate of Wayne State University law school. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and the Michigan Association for Justice.

When O’Neill is not practicing law, he spends time with his children, exercising and enjoys sports, writing and music.

He earned B.A. in Political Science with a Certificate in Business Administration from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1998; Juris Doctorate Degree from Wayne State University in December of 2001.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
