Attorney Information

Overview

Kirk Liebengood graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint and attended Wayne State University Law School while raising a family and working nights at a factory for General Motors. He graduated and passed the bar in 1977 and immediately began working on behalf of poor people as a legal aid lawyer. Since 1979 he has been a private practice. He taught criminal justice in the mid 80's at the U of M-Flint. He has been responsible for a number of life changing cases effecting literally thousands of people. He enjoys spending his work life assisting those who need it the most. He has been repeatedly called on upon by Federal judges to assist in cases where civil rights plaintiffs do not have attorneys. He has successfully sued the government, banks, insurance companies, lawyers, hospitals, and countless employers. He is adept at unwinding, complicated situations to the advantage of his clients. He has probably solved a problem similar to the one you face.

Recognitions

Kirk Liebengood has received a number or awards for his work on behalf of clients. Two that he is most pleased with are fairly recent. In April of 2008, his defense of civil liberties was recognized by the Genesee Bar Association. In September of 2008, a family he represented in a claim against government officials declared in a plaque that he was "our angel sent from God, to the best lawyer ever!" He routinely receives thank you cards from clients in appreciation for his work on their behalf.

Awards

Kirk M. Liebengood has practiced law for more than thirty years. During this time he has had successful experience in a number of different areas of the law including: personal injury, wrongful death, civil rights, government misconduct, zoning and planning, probate contests, domestic relations including spousal support, custody, child support, parenting time and of course property settlements. He has represented employees in claims for wrongful discharge, sexual harassment, handicap discrimination, age discrimination, and other areas of employment law. He has represented employees with claims under ERISA for pension benefits. He has been involved in a number of cases with substantial sums recovered for his clients.

It has been said that the people most interesting to know are the ones with the most scars. Kirk is pretty interesting. In addition to his wide range of legal experience he has endured and overcome many personal tragedies. This unique perspective gives him true insight into the actual consequences of the legal problems of his clients. For this reason he takes great care to make certain that clients are fully aware of their options and potential outcomes. The cost and duration of a conflict are considerations always in the forefront. He takes a no nonsense, candid, and client focused approach in his practice.

Hobbies

Mr. Liebengood enjoys construction projects around the farm, spending time in the woods, watching sporting events, especially ones involving his children and grandchildren, motorcycle riding, playing with his dogs, feeding and watching the birds, and all the other wildlife he encounters. He also enjoys reading, especially interesting history. He has hunted and fished his entire life and enjoys teaching his family to do the same.

Your Profile?  Update Now

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
