Overview
Terry L. Johnson was born and raised in the City of Inkster. After completing high school, Terry attended Michigan State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. After living out of State for several years he returned to the city where he was raised. While residing here Terry ran for a position on city council. Even though his bid was unsuccessful he continued to contribute to the city where he grew up. Terry has been teaching law to the Inkster Reserve Police for the past 15 years and continues to aid and assist the Inkster Police Department in training, as recently as October of 2023 teaching the Department on the legality of “squatting” and the domestic violence statues of Michigan. He is often seen on local news as a subject matter expert on Fox 2 and CBS Detroit 62.
Terry earned his law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School at Western Michigan University. Upon successful passage of the bar, he started his own law firm and actively practiced criminal law in the 22nd District court before both Judge Syliva James and Judge Sabrina Johnson. Terry has represented clients in matters against Wayne County Clerk’s office, the Michigan Secretary of State, and the City of Flint.
He has served as an elected official as a trustee on Farmington Public School board. He has a unique experience of understanding the role of the elected officer of municipalities and how to navigate the open meetings act (O.M.A.), and freedom of information act (F.O.I.A) while performing their elected duties.
Terry is of counsel to the firm and focuses on police training and updates, open meetings act compliance, updating policy and procedures of municipal entities along with F.O.I.A. regulations.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
