After receiving her undergraduate degree in Political Science and International Studies from Macalester College, Sequoia received her J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School, where she served as the Senior Managing Editor of the Wisconsin International Law Journal. After law school, Sequoia served as a law clerk for the Honorable Sara R. Grewing in the Second Judicial District of Minnesota.

Sequoia and her husband live in Saint Paul, MN. A native New Yorker, Sequoia enjoys spending her free time searching for the perfect bagel. She also enjoys trying new bakeries, baking, and reading.
