Jack L. Prescott - New Brighton, MN

Jack Prescott has passed and with him passes an era of bankruptcy practice. Jack started a bankruptcy practice in the 60's when consumer bankruptcy was in the back waters of the law. Magistrates oversaw bankruptcy proceedings, and bankruptcy clients faced a strong stigma associated with the process. Medical collections, subprime auto lenders, utility companies, legal loan sharks in the form of small retail credit financer's, and even some real loan sharks were the creditors. Representation was costly and hard to find. Jack helped that dynamic change dramatically. With his clear understanding of bankruptcy law and its process Jack created a practice were clients in financial need could find good quality representation at a reasonable cost.

Jack loved people and the greatest joy in his practice was the interaction he had with clients and the people he met in the process. He treated all of the people he dealt with respect, be they clients, attorneys, creditors, judges or trustees. When you were dealing with Jack, Jack was your friend and confidant no matter the situation. Above all he was a people person and had a personality that would unintentionally but perceptively take over the room. His humanity, kindness, quick wit, deprecating manner and empathy will be deeply missed. He always had a quick smile, a joke, a wink, and some odd old saying he would throw out to alleviate a client's tension, the trustee's unease or the creditor's enmity. As generations of Minnesotans heard from Jack "this is all we do and we do it well." We will miss you Jack.
