Biography
Kathryn brings extensive trial experience to the firm having tried a number of civil and criminal cases from complex felony fraud cases to guardianships. While she’s comfortable in a courtroom, Kathryn knows that litigation isn’t necessarily the right path forward for everyone. Kathryn has represented counties and counseled county commissioners and department heads with regard to land use, personnel, child protection, data practices, open meeting, and contracts issues. Kathryn is looking forward to getting to know clients in and around Northfield and assisting them as they navigate their own paths.
Background
Kathryn grew up close to Council Bluffs, Iowa. She attended Missouri Western State University for her bachelor’s degree and then graduated from the University of Minnesota’s law school. After law school, Kathryn briefly practiced at a Mankato firm. She then spent 10 years in county attorney’s offices in southern Minnesota. Kathryn believes she’s the youngest woman ever elected county attorney in Minnesota, when she was elected as the Faribault County Attorney in 2018. She joined Jacobsen Law Firm, P.A. in September of 2026.
Personal
Kathryn and her husband Jeff live in Northfield and have two children. Outside of the office, Kathryn is part of the running community and loves to participate in the Defeat of Jesse James Day races as well as the Mill Towns Race Series. Kathryn also volunteers with the HOPE Center, Rice County’s domestic and sexual assault advocacy center.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
