Attorney Information

Overview

I practice exclusively in the areas of family law and criminal defense, with a special focus on high-conflict cases. I have represented clients from a wide range of social, cultural and economic backgrounds, and my assistance has been sought in many complex procedural and jurisdictional issues. I often represent individuals with highly sensitive subject matters, the outcome of which may have an impact on that person’s teaching, childcare or gaming license. I consider professionalism and absolute confidentiality to be critically important with respect to my services.

As someone who was born and raised in Shakopee, I grew up in the Twin Cities area, and currently live with my wife and family in Prior Lake. In my free time outside the office, I enjoy hiking, landscape design, and water gardening.

I received my law degree from Hamline University School of Law and have been in private practice since 1996. While attending Hamline, I served as a writer, published author and Primary Editor of the Hamline Journal of Public Law and Policy.

In the early years of my law practice, I dedicated some of my free time as a volunteer for the Minnesota Valley Humane Society, where I served on the Board of Directors. I have also spent time as a mentor for high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in the legal profession.

I have volunteered as a lecturer for Parents Forever, a parent education course offered in Scott and Carver counties, in which I discussed and answered questions from parents about the laws pertaining to custody, parenting time, child support and the dynamics of raising children as divorced parents.

In addition to being an aggressive advocate, I also serve as a family court neutral, providing Early Neutral Evaluation, mediation and arbitration services to parties going through disputes regarding divorce, custody and parenting time, as well as child support, spousal maintenance, property division, and tax issues, with the objective of helping those individuals to reach a compromised settlement.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
