Overview

Thanks for being here — I’m Amanda Montgomery, owner and attorney of Montgomery Law PLLC. I’d like to share a bit of background about myself as I feel that’s important in starting a successful working relationship.

I believe that I gained powerful customer service knowledge growing up in and working at my family’s restaurant in a suburb of Saint Paul from the time of needing to stand on a bucket to reach the dish sprayer, all the way through completing my undergrad. These invaluable people skills have evolved into my work as an attorney and working with clients from all walks of life. As chef, Anthony Bourdain once stated:

“Service industry work develops the “soft skills” recruiters talk about on LinkedIn — discipline, promptness, the ability to absorb criticism, and most important, how to read people like a book. The work is thankless and fun and messy, and the world would be a kinder place if more people tried it. With all due respect to my former professors, I’ve long believed I gained more knowledge in kitchens, bars, and dining rooms than any college could even hold.”

After obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and a minor in Spanish, I went to law school at William Mitchell (now Mitchell Hamline). I started my own practice in 2012, and have entirely focused on criminal defense work, including expungements. I’ve also handled family law matters that have arisen from criminal case work. I represent clients in all types of cases from petty misdemeanor traffic cases to serious felonies, such as first-degree murder. I am admitted to practice in both Minnesota state and federal courts.

Outside of my own practice, I've collaborated with Earl Gray (Earl Gray Defense), a criminal defense attorney of over 50 years, on many serious felony cases, including federal trial work.

Though I office in White Bear Lake, I have had clients all over Minnesota, from up in Grand Marais, down to Albert Lea.

My personality and demeanor coupled with my ability to communicate and work with prosecutors has achieved favorable results for my clients throughout the years. I have vigorously represented my client’s constitutional rights throughout their cases and will always do the same for you. I am here to listen to your opinions on how you want your case to proceed while also providing the legal advice that you need. Whether you think you are in the wrong or completely innocent, I will work with you to get the best possible results. I’m not afraid to take your case to trial and fight for your freedom. I have been involved in trials with charges of criminal sexual conduct, murder, drugs, assault, child molestation, domestic strangulation, theft, fraud … Whether we are pursuing evidentiary issues, plea negotiation, or jury trial — I will be thoroughly prepared to represent you in your case.

Needing a criminal lawyer can be a very stressful time in your life. Please trust that I am here to listen, be available, guide you through the process — explaining each step of the process — and overall understanding you and your goals. I am committed to being available to answer your questions and giving you honest advice.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
