Overview
Brett A. Benkovics always knew he wanted to be an attorney. As a kid, he was attracted to the drama he saw on TV. Now, he realizes that the spotlight is better shown on the real-life people who come to him for help.
Brett has been with the firm since September 2015 when he began working as a legal assistant while studying for the LSAT and applying to law school. In his first few months, he was impressed by the incredible sense of family amongst the team, and how everyone worked together to provide the best representation for their clients. This client-focused culture of collaboration was what pushed him to pursue a long-term role with the firm.
Now with law school behind him, Brett handles probate matters and provides research and drafting assistance for the other attorneys in the firm. His passion lies in helping find legal solutions that improve clients' lives. If Brett can relieve a client's stress and bring them a sense of finality with a favorable outcome, that brings him joy.
He understands that navigating a tedious estate plan with looming fears of probate and estate costs often leaves people overwhelmed and confused. He prides himself on relieving that stress, asking the right questions to determine his client’s next steps, and accomplishing their goals.
Outside of work, you can find Brett hunting and backpacking with family, friends, and his trusty dog, Yodi. When work requirements permit, he spends time at his family's cabin in Nisswa fishing and enjoying nature. He supports several nonprofits that are near to his heart, including Save the BWCA, Sportsman for the BWCA, Nature Conservancy, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, and Leech Lake Legacy.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
