Attorney Information
Overview
In May of 2016, Jay M. Kilpatrick joined the Kilpatrick & Philley, Attorneys at Law team. Jay is a native of Mississippi; originally from Philadelphia, Mississippi. He joined the firm after 16 years with another larger firm in the Jackson area, where he was a shareholder. Jay's addition to Kilpatrick & Philley, Attorneys at Law only strengthens the resources available to our clients.
Prior to joining the firm, Jay worked primarily in the area of personal injury, where he developed a maritime practice representing individuals and families of individuals who are injured working offshore, including a Deepwater Horizon claim. This is just one of the reasons Jay is such a great fit and addition to the team. In this practice, he assisted in securing a settlement for a single family who tragically lost a loved one in an offshore incident that was the largest known settlement for an offshore death.
Jay has been instrumental in orchestrating the recovery of over $35 million for his clients by way of both verdicts and settlements in various types of cases. He also practices in the area of family law where he represents individuals in all aspects of divorce and child custody.
He is passionate about relating to his clients, never treating it as just a "case" he is working on, but as a matter that will drastically impact a person's life.
Jay has successfully argued before the Fifth Circuit on three separate occasions and was featured in the July 2006 edition of the ABA Journal. He is rated AV-Preeminent® by Martindale-Hubbell®, a member of Million Dollar Advocates Forum®, and has been included in the Mid-South Rising Stars list by Super Lawyers® in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014.
In his free time, Jay enjoys Ole Miss sporting events, his children's sporting events, and hunting.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
