Attorney Information

Overview

General contractors, subcontractors and other members of the construction trade rely on Scott Long to resolve conflicts and keep projects going. Scott applies nearly three decades of experience in construction law to provide practical counsel grounded in knowledge of the industry.

Scott understands that dispute resolution in construction often requires preserving a working relationship so the project can stay on track – or so the parties can work together in the future. He works to solve problems outside the courtroom when possible. In one recent matter, he helped a contractor whose project was delayed by the coronavirus negotiate revised terms with the owner.

When litigation is unavoidable, clients benefit from Scott’s extensive experience trying and arbitrating cases and arguing appeals. He has tried more than 50 cases to verdict on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants in federal and state courts. He has litigated a wide variety of commercial cost recovery, bonding, construction, real estate and business dispute cases.

Scott also works to protect the interests of homeowners’ associations. Working on behalf of condominium homeowners’ associations, Scott has recovered millions of dollars needed to repair construction defects.

Scott is adept at interpreting AIA and AGC contract boilerplates, negotiating their terms, and helping clients avoid potential pitfalls within them. A Fellow in the Construction Lawyers Society of America, he frequently speaks on legal topics affecting the industry.

He has been recognized by the Kansas City Business Journal’s “Best of the Bar,” Super Lawyers, and Best Lawyers in America, among others.

Scott is a proud father of three children. He enjoys running and adventure travel. He spends as much time as he can in the mountains of Colorado.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
