I had the unfortunate experience of this person being assigned to my case as a GAL. My deceased from a heroin overdose X wife's mother sued for visitation under grandparent's rights. After explaining to her the numerous reasons why all I wanted to be present during visitation with my three little boys, not the least of which was telling my young sons that there Daddy didn't give there Mommy enough money and that was why she was a drug addict and died. The first thing she did was ask if it would be Ok if the kids met with them without me, under her supervision. It as if everything I have just spent the last 30 min telling her and showing her was disregarded not to mention I JUST MET HER. Imediatly I questioned her competence. X inlaws were paying her GAL fees. So long story short every other month I have to let someone I have every reason to distrust have custody of my children without my supervision. In these cases, the GAL is the deciding factor. Her grandfather and father were lawyers in Clayton, but I'm sure that has nothing to do with why someone with so little life experience and far less legal experience is even allowed to be a GAL. I looked up other GAL and all have much more experience than her. If Taylor is assigned to your case stronly suggest petitioning for any other, you definitely don't want this person deciding whats best for anything in your life especialy the most precious things.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
