Attorney Information

Overview

During my 30 year career I have practiced law in both the private and non-profit sectors. My practice is concentrated in the areas of consumer rights, bankruptcy and commercial litigation. In 1995, my husband Bruce Levitt and I decided to found our own firm, Levitt & Slafkes, P.C. so that we could focus our practice on small businesses and on individuals from all walks of life in both bankruptcy related and litigation matters.

My core belief is that you succeed by treating others with fairness and respect. When you sit down with me to discuss your difficult financial situation, I will treat you as a real person, with real concerns and not just another case number.

Here’s some of my background. I received my undergraduate degree with honors, in psychology from Brooklyn College and my law degree with honors from Emory University Law School. In 2008 I earned my Masters of Social Work with honors from Rutgers University and am a licensed social worker. I believe that my social work training and experience allows me to bring a unique perspective to the practice of bankruptcy and foreclosure law.

I have had articles published in the New Jersey Law Journal and have participated in the Bankruptcy Inn of Court and Max Gardner's Consumer Defense Academy

I have a long standing commitment to volunteerism and the importance of contributing to my community. I served three terms as an elected member of the South Orange Maplewood Board of Education. I have also mentored youth and served on numerous nonprofit boards including Family Promise of Morris County, Family Connections, South Orange Maplewood Community Coalition on Race and the Columbia High School Scholarship Fund. Additionally, in 2005 I had the honor of serving on the Governor’s Task Force on Mental Health, Children’s Advisory Subcommittee.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
