Attorney Information

Overview

Steven H. Cohen, Esq., is a Partner and Chairman of the Workers’ Compensation practice at Davis, Saperstein & Salomon, P.C. He is an experienced leader in workers’ compensation law and is dedicated to representing workers across New Jersey seeking permanency awards, medical benefits, medical treatment and wage and income benefits for those injured on the job. He has decades of expertise fighting for injured workers’ rights in New Jersey Worker’s Compensation claims. One hundred percent of his practice consists of representing those who were hurt on the job.

Attorney Steven Cohen has been recognized by his fellow workers’ compensation attorneys, having been elected to leadership roles in both the New Jersey State Bar Association and the New Jersey Association for Justice (NJAJ) Workers’ Compensation Sections.

Since 2005, Steven Cohen has served as Co-Chair of NJAJ’s Workers’ Compensation Section. In that role, he has chaired and taught other lawyers as part of their required continuing legal education programs on how NJ workers’ compensation claims are investigated, litigated, and settled. He handles workers’ compensation cases in all New Jersey counties, with an emphasis on representing workers whose injuries have ended or shortened their work life expectancy. He represents workers suffering all types of injuries, including neck and back injuries, rupturing or herniating discs, shoulder fractures or tears, knee fractures, ligament injuries, hand, foot, ankle, and hip injuries. He accepts cases regardless of fault because even if a worker is injured because of their own negligence, they are entitled to the same benefits.

As part of his Workers’ Compensation practice, he also evaluates claims to determine whether an injured worker can sue an employer or an outside person, party, or business through a separate Third-Party Claim. Several of these Third-Party Claims, handled by his fellow partners at Davis, Saperstein & Salomon, P.C., have resulted in multi-million-dollar settlements. This additional compensation is common for those workers injured in motor vehicle accidents, construction site injuries, or those exposed to toxic chemicals, explosions, fires, and fumes. He has extensive

experience representing injured police officers and firefighters, as well as those suffering repetitive motion injuries, psychological claims, and workers suffering mesothelioma from asbestos exposure.

Steven Cohen accepts all types of Worker Compensation claims on a contingency fee basis, meaning that the worker does not pay any legal fees unless their case is won and they are paid a settlement. All of his consultations are free and can be done in person, by phone, or through Zoom, and other secure video conferencing.

Steven Cohen is also the author of the e-book New Jersey Workers’ Compensation Guide, available upon request or as a complimentary download at https://www.dsslaw.com/workers-compensation-ebook/.

After graduating cum laude from Pace University School of Law, he was admitted to practice law in New Jersey in 1992 and in New York in 1993. For over thirty years, Steven Cohen has settled or litigated Workers’ Compensation claims in most of New Jersey’s counties. Earlier in his career, he handled claims on behalf of both injured workers and employers. The experience of being a former worker’s compensation defense attorney has given him a unique and powerful perspective on how Workers’ Compensation injury claims are evaluated, defended, and successfully resolved.

Steven Cohen also serves on the Executive Committee for the Workers’ Compensation Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association and previously served as Chair from May 2018 through May 2020. The Executive Committee acts as a voice for practicing workers’ compensation attorneys across New Jersey. It reviews legislation being considered before the New Jersey State Legislature in Trenton, New Jersey, that impacts workers’ compensation and coordinates with leadership in the Division of Workers’ Compensation on procedures and practices within the Division. The Committee also occasionally drafts proposed legislation with a goal of improving New Jersey’s workers’ compensation law.

In addition to his State Bar leadership, Steven Cohen serves as Vice President of the New Jersey Advisory Council on Safety and Health, an organization that advances legislation on behalf of injured workers in New Jersey. He has also been recognized as a New Jersey Super Lawyers honoree from 2012 to the present.
