Hired Attorney 2021-2022Simple bankruptcy. Met with his paralegal in May of 2021, gave them a summons from a creditor, paid them the filing and court fees and gave her ALL the docs needed, which she entered in front of me. July comes and I ask about a court date, should be coming up. They hadn't filed yet, because they moved and have a new "system". End of July I happen to notice a judgement rendered against me because they never responded to the summons I gave them in May. She assures me she's on it, will enter it this week. I check in a month later, no response. Multiple voicemails, no response. December rolls around and I get a letter indicating they are filing a Wage Garnishment. "We can stop that, but we need updated docs." WTF -- so I RESUBMIT all the docs I gave her in May ... It is now March of 2022 and the bankruptcy STILL has NOT been filed. I received a notice from my Employer about a Wage Garnishment. NOT A SINGLE THING HAS BEEN DONE. I speak with Jeff yesterday, she says she's in need of docs, but can't tell me which ones and they will call me the next day. It's the next day and not only no call, but their office is closed and their voicemails are full. No response to my emails either ... I'm thoroughly disgusted with the incompetence of these 2. I wouldn't recommend these two to handle a parking ticket.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
