I had been recommended the firm of Altman & Altman by one of my clients, who insisted that this firm was timely and professional in their earnest recommendation. My client had even stated them to be a “pro-client” firm that would put forth an honest and uttermost effort to assist their clientele, and after my experience I can only conclude that my friend must have unfortunately confused their assistive firm with this one. Yet, in my experience, this firm seemed to be concerned with the matter of my payment transference first and foremost, and not soon after one could be forgiven for believing that I must not have paid them at all. Not only did I have to facilitate any kind of interaction with the firm on my behalf, but even when I called to inquire regarding the progress of our current agreement, I was often met with a swift dial tone or put on hold for unending periods of time. The receptionist (Suzy) who often answered the phone was dismissive of both my requests and the urgency I presented them with, and the customer service I had received in the midst of this transaction was abysmal. I would often be given some dismissive answer regarding a phone call that would come in the next few days that never arrived, and yet with every attempt I made there was never a moment of urgency from the company’s side to alleviate my grievances. Finally, the receptionist’s general attitude between my first interaction to the last was one that felt as complete indifference, a grim foreshadowing of the end result of my attempts to work with this firm. The point of my transaction was for acquiring property and closing the deal, a costly process and business that can’t afford constant delay and miscommunication. Yet even with the gravity of the situation, with no small sum of money being involved in my legal transactions, I was given the same kind of indifference one might expect to find at the Product Return section of your local supermarket. The firm at large decided it was not worth the effort to contact me regarding the proposal they created on my behalf, the terms of the agreement that they had signed with my authority, and only when the ink had dried was I even privy to the binding financial actions that this firm had taken on my account. At first believing this to simply be a gross oversight and dire miscommunication, I had attempted to contact the office numerous times to express my confusion. What had started as a big misunderstanding quickly revealed itself to be blatant neglect to the terms of our business arrangement. Instead of being treated with the tailored and specialized care that I had been recommended to them with, I felt more like my request had been “processed”, and that the team had decided that any decisions made by the firm are to just be accepted by the clientele. Upon becoming irate, as one would do with wealth of this size on the line, I had attempted to contact the office countless times to try and mend what damage had been done. It was to my disgusted surprise to find a cautionary warning from their office, claiming that attempting to conduct business and right these wrongs was “harassment to the persons of their office”, and had since been requested to cease before legal action had been taken. This firm uses distancing and an aloof nature to hide these business practices, and it should be advised that business conducted with these individuals will be done without any autonomy to yourself. Take this warning in earnest, for they will simply convince you to “trust them” with your right and wares, only for these strangers to make large decisions upon your life and finances without a word of say from yourself.

wanted and willing to purchase a condo at 327 Admiral Lane in the Bronx. This was really a waste of time and money from beginning to end. Mr. Altman was the seller's attorney and I would not deal with any transaction that has his name. it was a back and forth between him and my lawyer for a "Willfull Default" a word on the contract of sale and condo violation and he ended up returning my check for the downpayment and deal was cancelled. Thank you God deal was cancelled because the property went for sale before and was put on the market again God knows what reasons. 2 deals cancellation for the same property within 2months.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
