My fiancee and I hired Irene Stein as our attorney for the purchase of a Cooperative apartment in Brooklyn. Although most phone calls and emails prior to closing were handled not by the lawyer but by her assistant, the assistant seemed knowledgeable and answered questions promptly. Irene worked with us personally during our purchase contract review, and then again during the closing itself. She seemed knowledgeable and experienced on both occasions, and recommended contract changes that I know will save us money and legal headaches down the road. I recommend Irene's services without hesitation, and will certainly look to hire her in the future.

No-nonsense, straight to the point and very professional... these are the words I would use to describe Ms. Irene Stein and her legal team. From our first consultation to weeks after the closing, we were always well informed and thoroughly explained every step of the home purchase process and any residuals, which can be very complicated not to mention overwhelming. My sister and I were buying our first property in 2013 and were looking for a good attorney, when a friend who closed on a house a couple of years before recommended Ms. Irene Stein offices. I consider myself a very detail oriented person, sometimes pushing the boundaries on the patience of the person providing the details. I was very relieved and pleased when I found that both Irene and Steven (her right-hand legal support) were not only very knowledgeable in their field but also welcomed any and all questions I had, having an open-communication policy with their clients regarding every step of the transaction. Can't say that about many attorneys. From the contract signing, which was negotiated as much as possible in our favor and explained to us in details, to the closing table we knew we were in good hands. We felt very confident having Ms. Stein representing us as she was very hands on on every aspect of the transaction and very thorough with never-ending paperwork. Thanks to her and her legal team, our first home buying process ended up being a much more pleasant experience than anticipated. Needless to say, if I ever plan to buy or sell another property, I would definitely go with Ms. Stein offices again, and I would recommend it in a heartbeat to anyone who is looking for representation. She knows her business and she is very good at it.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
