Hired Law firm 2020Trying to get my money from my closing on April 9,2020 was like getting an act of congress! Closed on the ninth, should've received my money at by the 10th and was told the would send my check by mail. I asked to pick it up on the 10th and was told, due to covid19, no. I reminded them that 2 days earlier I was in their office, at their request, to sign the papers. I was then told they were closed because it was Good Friday. I checked their website and it stated they were open, I drove over to their office building and saw people going in, I entered their office building and opened the door to their suite, were their was a few people working inside. I was asked if I needed help, and I told them who I was and was told to leave as they were closed. I emailed the office and told them that I would be over Monday, 4/13/2020, for my check at 10 am, they can give me my check in the parking lot. On Monday, I texted the office and told them I was in the parking lot, I did this every 5 minutes for 50 minutes before someone came out and handed me my check. I was only asked my first name never asked to show ID. In my settlement statement an escrow account was set up for the final water bill of $250, when I received the bill, I was to pay it and then show proof that I paid it before my money would be returned. Escrow accounts are paid when you present the bank holding your money in escrow the bill, they pay it out of that account and refund you the remainder of the money. I asked for the bank and account number and was told that she was not going to give me her personal bank and account number. She is personally holding my money in her bank. I paid the bill and sent her proof and asked for the money back and now I'm being told she will get it sent out sometime next week! It is a shame that I have to beg for my money that is due to me and to have to wait until she feels ready to give me what I am due. To make me wait in the parking lot like she did was just immature and to have to beg for my money is absurd. It is hard to believe she was actually hired to work on my behalf.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
