TRUST & ESTATE ADMINISTRATION AND PLANNING
Pat understands that planning your estate may be a difficult and emotional task, which is why Pat listens and takes the time to understand your family dynamics in devising an estate plan that meets your present and future needs. As each estate plan is unique, it is important to learn about each client, his/her family, values and specific concerns when customizing an estate plan. Your estate plan may include the following: Wills, Health Care Proxies, Powers of Attorney, Irrevocable Trusts, Revocable Trusts, Supplemental Needs Trusts, Elder Law and Medicaid Planning, Succession Planning for small/family-owned businesses and tax strategies, all of which Pat has extensive knowledge in and experience with when devising an encompassing estate plan.
Once it becomes time to implement the estate plan, Pat assists the family with timely and efficient administration of the clients' Trust and Estate assets in order to facilitate a smooth and expeditious transition from the estate/trust to the beneficiaries. Pat also is certified to be appointed by the NYS Supreme and Surrogate's Court in matters involving Article 81 guardianships and currently serves as a Court Examiner of Guardian accounts for the Appellate Division, Third Department. She is also a member of the NYS Bar Association Elder Law and Trust and Estates Sections.
REAL ESTATE
Pat began her career with the former Evans, Severn, Bankert & Peet, a firm recognized for its extensive practice and expertise in real estate. While at Evans, Severn, Bankert & Peet (which later merged to become the current Felt Evans, LLP), Pat developed extensive knowledge and experience in all aspects of real estate, including residential and commercial closings for individuals and multiple lending institutions, title examination, Article XV actions to quiet title to disputed real estate and foreclosure. How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
