Attorney Information

Overview

David J. Bangel, Esq. graduated from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1990 and from Nova University Law School in 1993. Upon graduation, Mr. Bangel became associated with the law firm of Stewart, DeCurtis, Greenblatt, Manning, & Baez.

During his tenure with this firm, Mr. Bangel limited his practice to handling all aspects of Workers' Compensation cases. At that time, he represented insurance carriers and self-insured employers, gaining extremely valuable knowledge as to how the insurance companies and self-insured clients think about and approach cases.

In 1995, Mr. Bangel became associated with the law firm of Chesney, Murphy, & Moran, where he handled Workers' Compensation cases as well as Personal Injury defense litigation-again, for insurance carriers and large self-insured clients.

In 1997, he founded the law firm of Bangel & Cohen, LLP. In founding the firm, Mr. Bangel decided to switch to the other side of the table and represent the injured worker before the Workers' Compensation Board. It was here that Mr. Bangel found his true calling and was able to utilize all of the information he had obtained while representing insurance carriers during the early part of his career. The firm has grown and in 2011 changed its' name to Bangel, Cohen & Falconetti, LLP upon the addition of a new partner, Christopher Falconetti, Esq.

Mr. Bangel was admitted to the Bar of the State of New York in 1994 and to the United States District Court for the Eastern and Southern Districts in 1996. Mr. Bangel is a member of the New York State Bar Association, Queens County Bar Association as well as the Injured Workers' Bar Association.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
