Attorney Information

Overview

In his role as Client Relations Attorney, Derrick oversees the operations of the Client Relations Department and provides legal assistance to potential new clients. Derrick assists potential new clients with any preliminary legal inquiries they may have and provides them with the appropriate guidance. He also works to ensure the firm is providing superior legal representation and customer service to its clients.

Previously, Derrick handled cases for the firm’s Butterbaugh division, which works to restore improperly charged leave for service members. He also worked to help veterans receive monetary compensation resulting from unfair employment practices committed against them. In addition to participating in hearings and engaging in settlement negotiations before the Merit Systems Protection Board, Derrick drafted briefs submitted to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

In addition to handling cases for the Butterbaugh division, Derrick also handled real estate matters as well as low-level criminal and traffic violations.

Derrick has also been featured by the Times Union as an “Up and Comer” in June 2009.

Derrick originally joined the firm as a law clerk in January 2009. Prior to joining Tully Rinckey, Derrick served as an intern for the Schenectady County Attorney’s Office, where his work was focused on Family Court cases. He was also a legal aide in the Litigation Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s Office. In this position, he dealt with lawsuits filed against the State by prisoners. He also handled cases concerning retaliation and discrimination in the workplace.

Derrick is a native of Rome, NY and attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in history. He then returned to New York to attend Albany Law School. Derrick now holds his juris doctorate and has been admitted to the New York State Bar.

An avid sports fan, Derrick remains loyal to his alma mater and strongly supports Virginia Tech football and basketball. He also enjoys golfing.

    Hired Attorney 2025
My husband is a combat Veteran, 82nd airborne with two tours in Somalia. We purchased our NNY property with a VA loan. When we took possession of the property we experienced immediate issues with a property easement where we are the servient estate. The dominant estate created an undue burden on our property with a hazardous utility panel. Not only is there a burden to the property based on easement burden, there is also an infringement on the property title. We hired the Latham NY office of Tully Rinckey. They transferred our case to Carol Crossett (Partner, Manhattan). Ms. Crossett is perhaps the most obnoxiously arrogant, rude, unethical, shrew on the face of this planet. In addition to her terrible demeanor, she was lazy to acquire knowledge about our case, and her grasp of property law is apparently so poor that she tried to convince us, her client, the Veteran family, to pay for all of the costs to resolve the overburdened easement and infringement. Opposing counsel admitted in court documents that she had told him that we didn't have a case. Unethical! Further, she drained the $15k retainer by pretending that she couldn't understand the difference between a utility panel, a utility meter, and a utility pole. She feined ignorance so she could bill us for responses to her nonsensical questions. It was one big grift. We brought this situation to Derrick and he decided to allow the big grift to continue. Luckily, another firm stepped in at no cost to us to resolve the civil dispute and the title infringement, and at no expense to us. Tully Rinckey doesn't support Veterans, they exploit them.
