Since our founding in 1913, the legal team at Kates Nussman Ellis Earle & Landolfi LLP, in Hackensack, New Jersey, has represented clients with complex and stressful business, real estate, estate planning and employment law issues.

It is a history that's been focused on providing clients with a high level of service tailored to achieving specific goals. We don't intimidate or try to persuade our clients to take unnecessary legal action that is costly or unlikely to succeed. By looking at your choices, we can determine together the best course to pursue.

Although our team of lawyers practice in different legal areas, our firm's philosophy is to handle each and every client with:

  • Commitment — we hold ourselves to a high standard and place an emphasis on strong results and efficiency

A Strong Presence in Our Legal Community

Throughout our history, attorneys at our firm have held prominent positions such as first Chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Commission, judges of various courts, including a presiding judge of the Appellate Division of the Superior Court of New Jersey and counsel to a former New Jersey Governor. Many of our past and present attorneys have also served on the New Jersey Supreme Court Ethics Committee and have been commended for our pro bono and volunteer service.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
