Hired Attorney 2009-2010Pete was a great attorney for me when I needed to go through bankruptcy. He made the whole complicated process easy and not overwhelming for me.

Hired Attorney 2018-2019When we first met with peter he was nice and very knowledgeable about the bankruptcy field. He knew the ins and outs and what we needed to do to be successful. After we finally filed (aka he got paid) he dropped off the face of the earth. He showed up 30 seconds before the court hearing leaving us sitting there scared he wasn’t going to show, then after the 341 meeting he has done nothing but ignore our calls, emails, emails/calls from our mortgage company, then finally after 4 weeks he answered my husbands call. Our mortgage company sent him our reaffirmation papers that he claims he never received and “we weren’t the only clients of his having this issue-must be the mail system” then suddenly finding an email from our mortgage companies attorney, never responding to them, never did we receive our reaffirmation STILL to this day. Our bankruptcy was discharged on 7/22/19 and I had to go downtown MYSELF and file a form proving we took our second bankruptcy course online in May that he failed to file. We are devastated he did this to us and have no idea where we stand with our mortgage company as they keep telling us we need to speak to our attorney who is representing us. So let’s say there is about 20-22 emails and voicemails we’ve sent to peter in the last 4 weeks that he has never answered. He knows the ins and outs of bankruptcy but is so scattered and cluttered around I cannot believe he does not have someone helping him in his office. I wish I could have made this review differently; as I felt like peter was going to do what he knew we needed. But as of now, the 60 day waiting period is up and we’ve yet to reaffirm either vehicles or our mortgage. I’m not sure where or how to fix this but I cannot lose my home and for him to know and see our desperation and not care is astonishing. We are hurt, offended, and scared at what has happened. And I hope he does not do this to another person who is in desperate need.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
