Attorney Information

Overview

Jeffrey DeRoberts has been dealing with the family and matrimonial laws of New York since becoming an attorney back in 1993. As a solo attorney, he can provide the personalized attention you may not get at a larger firm. There is no substitute for one-on-one contact and accessibility from your attorney, particularly in difficult situations involving your family.

Because of Mr. DeRoberts' focused knowledge with child custody, child support and divorce, he can often resolve your dispute quicker and more cost-effectively than a larger law firm. He is supported by two dedicated paralegals, but he personally attends to the details of your case, including being at your side for all hearings or negotiation sessions. He offers you his experience, dedication and personal attention throughout the duration of your case.

We handle all family court matters in Onondaga County and surrounding areas of Central New York, from Syracuse, Auburn and Ithaca to Binghamton, Utica and Watertown.

Special Experience in Post-Divorce Disputes

Long after your divorce is finalized and you have settled into your new life, circumstances may change. The other parent may not be allowing you the scheduled amount of visitation. You may wish to go back to school, take a new job or relocate. You may need additional financial support to provide for the needs of your growing and active child.

Jeffrey DeRoberts devotes a large portion of his practice to modification hearings to alter custody, child support or spousal support and helping clients enforce visitation or child support orders.

We can, of course, also represent your interests in your New York divorce, assuring fair treatment in property division or a marital separation agreement.

Out-of-State Clients

Many of our clients are non-custodial parents whose visitation rights are gradually degraded by the parent who has primary custody. We can represent parents who have relocated beyond Central New York or even out of state, reasserting your rights in contempt proceedings so that your relationship with your children remains strong despite the distance between you.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
