Attorney Information

Overview

I’ve dedicated my career to helping people through some of the most difficult and personal legal challenges they’ll ever face. Family law is about real people, real families, and real futures. That’s why I’ve built my practice around communication and diligence.

After graduating cum laude from Michigan State University College of Law in 2016, I began my legal career as a law clerk for a judge handling a busy family law docket. That experience shaped how I approach my cases to this day: with attention to detail, respect for the process, and a strong understanding of what courts value.

From there, I went on to work for the child support services agency serving Buncombe, Transylvania, and Polk counties, where I helped parents navigate the often-confusing world of support obligations. I later joined a respected and fast-paced family law practice serving a number of Western North Carolina counties, where I had the opportunity to work closely with clients on everything from custody disputes to property division.

Now, as the founder of The Law Office of Steven M. King, I bring that experience directly to the clients I serve. Whether I’m negotiating a separation agreement or guiding clients through a trial, I work hard to keep clients informed, involved, and supported every step of the way.

When you have a question, I’ll get back to you. And when it’s time to make a tough decision, I’ll make sure you have the information and perspective you need to move forward with confidence.

Outside the office, I’m proud to have a family of my own and understand firsthand the importance of protecting what matters most.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
