Overview
Stephen S. Ashley, Jr. is a registered patent attorney licensed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and has been admitted to practice law by the State Bars of North Carolina and Mississippi. He has practiced law for more than twenty-five years and has practiced exclusively in the field of intellectual property law in North Carolina for the past twenty-two years.
Stephen was born in Binghamton, New York, and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he graduated from South Mecklenburg High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from North Carolina State University and obtained his law degree at Mississippi College School of Law.
Upon graduation from law school in 1997, Stephen worked for three years at a nationally recognized civil litigation firm in Mississippi, where he handled complex litigation such as products liability, medical malpractice and environmental cases. His work included several wrongful death cases and a national class action case arising from accidents involving Firestone tires on Ford Explorer vehicles.
In 2000, Stephen returned to his home State of North Carolina to practice at intellectual property law firms in Greensboro and Charlotte. For the past twenty-two years, Stephen has practiced exclusively in the field of intellectual property, helping businesses and individuals protect their inventions, trademarks and other intellectual property. Stephen has prepared and filed hundreds of patent applications in a variety of technologies, including chemical, mechanical, medical devices, consumer products, and textiles. He is also a seasoned litigator, having handled numerous intellectual property cases representing intellectual property owners against infringers as well as defending businesses accused of infringing patents, trademarks and copyrights.
In 2008, Stephen founded the Ashley Law Firm P.C., dedicated to providing high quality intellectual property legal services. Since 2008, Stephen has been selected fifteen times to Business North Carolina's "Legal Elite" in the field of intellectual property. Each year Business North Carolina magazine sends ballots to the more than 20,000 practicing attorneys in North Carolina and asks them which lawyers they would rate as being among the best in sixteen specific fields of law. The lawyers receiving the most votes in each category constitute Business North Carolina's "Legal Elite." Stephen has served as an instructor for continuing legal education courses relating to intellectual property and has taught courses in intellectual property at Central Piedmont Community College's Institute for Entrepreneurship. Stephen also serves on the alumni advisory board of North Carolina State University's College of Sciences.
Stephen has a wife, Mary, and two children. They are members of Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
