Consulted Law firm 2003-20075015 SouthPark Drive Suite 230 Durham, NC 27713- 7736 Sir, My name is Veerabhadra Rao Kattoju, living in Mahwah, NJ. I was working with AT&T Labs till my retirement in 2007. I had a patent processed while working with AT&T (US Patent No. US 7,405,553 B1) which is an intellectual property of AT&T. The application was processed by your office in North Carolina for AT&T and I am not familiar with the process. I worked on a subject that is not related to the previous patent or my work with AT&T Labs to develop this new system. The new "system" uses commercially available components that have been in use for several decades. My initial search did not indicate any "prior art" like the system that I am proposing. I like to know if you can help me to file a "Provisional Utility Patent" application. As I am a retiree with limited funds, I want to make sure that I am not committing beyond my means or something that I cannot cancel. The document that I have prepared is about 28 pages consisting of 11 drawings with notes, 4 spreadsheets and 13 text pages. I want to make sure that I understand the scope of your services for this category. I am assuming the following steps will be necessary. 1. Review by a Patent Attorney 2. Patent Search Report to identify "prior art" issues. 2a. I have to make any changes if necessary, to resolve "prior art" issues (see item 4 below). 2a1.Professionally Drafted Patent Writing 2a2.Professionally Drafted Patent Drawings 3. Request a provisional patent application for 12 months “patent pending” status 4. If the system cannot be modified to resolve “prior art" issues - end the Patent pursuit process. Kindly advise me pricing for items 1 thru 4 above. What is the scope of work to apply for a full non-provisional patent application within 12 months? Can you give a cost estimate? o Am I required to use your services ONLY for full non-provisional patent application as you have secured "Patent Pending" status? o By using your services to get "Patent Pending" status" am I loosing any rights to my document? Please forgive me for asking these questions. I don't want to commit my family or myself for the sake of getting a patent. I will be ready to send the documents within one week. Thank you for your understanding and assistance in this matter. Sincerely Veerabhadra R. Kattoju - I was UNABLE to send this message using your web site. I am looking for information on patent application FYI. Thanks

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
