Attorney Information

Overview

Jessica has been practicing family law since 2008. She is a Board-Certified Family Law Specialist and has been since 2014.

Jessica knew from the beginning of her career that she wanted to be a family law attorney. She has focused her work on domestic law since her time at Campbell University, Norman A. Wiggins School of Law. Jessica prides herself in working with her clients to outline and achieve their case goals, whether inside or outside the courtroom. In discussing the same, Jessica said:

“My goal for each client I have the opportunity to represent is to provide that person with a case plan catered to their specific situation. I will not hesitate to try a case that needs to be tried in the courtroom. That said, I also understand the importance and benefits of working to resolve matters outside litigation when possible. I often remind my clients that this is their case, their family, and their future. My job as their attorney is to work to achieve their goals for the same within the parameters of North Carolina’s statutes and laws.”

Jessica practices in all areas of family law; however, she focuses her practice on complex custody cases. When asked why she has chosen to concentrate her practice on child custody issues, she said:

“Cases involving children can be the most difficult and emotional to handle. In my opinion, one of the most important aspects of being a custody lawyer is to listen. I will listen to my clients. I will ask questions to get to know the needs of the children involved. I will work with my clients to understand any issues involved regarding the other parent or caregiver. I will outline the law for my clients and always encourage my clients to ask questions. If court intervention is necessary, we will prepare together for my clients’ day in court, and I will work tirelessly to represent the best interest of my client and the children involved.”

Jessica also handles Family Law Appeals to the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the North Carolina Supreme Court. Why appellate work?

“I love legal research and writing. I enjoy studying a case file, reading a Court Order, and identifying appellate issues. I love the study of the law. My appellate line of practice allows me to do all those things.”

After Jessica leaves the office, she enjoys spending time with her family, horseback riding, and is an avid college basketball fan.

Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
