Attorney Information

Overview

Originally from New England, Matthew Stauff has lived and worked in North Carolina since 2006. He started his career in private practice before launching a seven-year tenure at Legal Aid of North Carolina, where he refined his analytical skills in child custody cases, housing issues, and unemployment benefits disputes. In order to focus his practice more fully on family law cases, Matthew joined his colleague Jordan Gross to form Stauff & Gross in 2014.

Matthew represents clients in divorce proceedings, child custody hearings and family law matters. He also accepts appointments as a Certified Parenting Coordinator in high-conflict custody cases. While he is an experienced litigator and is willing to advocate for his clients in court, Matthew believes that court should not always be the first option: Working out matters amicably through negotiation and settlement generally leads to a more efficient, cost-effective outcome.

Working with Jordan at Stauff & Gross has allowed Matthew to not only draw upon his extensive background in family law cases, but also get to know his clients as people. "Because we're a small firm, we're able to focus on the client," he says. "I'm fortunate to be able to help our clients work out their legal issues."

Matthew lives in North Raleigh with his son, dog, and two cats. Outside of the firm, he can be found working in his yard, reading, fishing, and enjoying time with his family and friends both within and outside of the legal field.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
