During her time there, Caryn focused on Superfund sites, particularly landfills, across the Northeast. She played a crucial role in holding responsible parties accountable for groundwater contamination, including the issuance of the first subpoena under CERCLA, a federal law.

Following her passion for law, Caryn pursued a law degree at the University of Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, graduating in 1992. Soon after, she became licensed to practice law in California and later moved to North Carolina in 1994.

Caryn's dedication to education led her to develop and administer a grant-sponsored Alternative Learning Program for Alexander County Schools while studying for the North Carolina Bar Exam. Since obtaining her North Carolina license in 1995, she started practicing law in Taylorsville with Joel Harbinson.

Caryn has successfully practiced in Estate Administration over the course of 28 years. She has successfully managed numerous estates, dealing with complex issues such as large family farms, estates with corporate assets and tax liability concerns, unknown heirs, Medicaid Estate Recovery, Wrongful Death claims, and Family Settlement Agreements.

Caryn is a highly accomplished attorney who dedicated her legal expertise to serving the Town of Taylorsville from 2005 to April 2023. Throughout her career, she has been an invaluable asset to various state, local, and private organizations, serving on multiple boards of directors.

In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Caryn was elected to the Alexander County Board of Education in 2008 and subsequently re-elected in 2012 and 2016. An exemplary leader, Caryn made history as the first female Chairman of the Board of Education in 2012, a position she held with distinction for three years. Following her tenure on the board, she transitioned seamlessly into the role of the Board's attorney, a position she continues to hold with unwavering commitment.

While Caryn's professional accomplishments are noteworthy, her greatest joy lies in her cherished family. She shares a loving partnership with her husband John, and together they have nurtured two remarkable children, Jenna Faire and Zachary John William. Jenna, an accomplished graduate of UNC Greensboro, has ventured abroad to Sweden for her studies and is now pursuing a law degree at Elon Law School in Greensboro, NC. Meanwhile, Zach, a talented athlete, pursued his passion for baseball at Virginia Tech and currently shines as a pitcher with the esteemed Washington Nationals Organization.

In rare moments of respite, Caryn finds solace in the company of her beloved dogs, indulges in invigorating hikes, finds tranquility through yoga, and nurtures her creative spirit by delving into the art of hand quilting.
