Dean received his B.A. degree from the University of the South and his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Virginia. He joined the law firm of Hahn, Loeser & Parks in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1978. In 1981, he began working at Belden & Blake Corporation in Canton, Ohio, where he became Assistant General Counsel in 1985 and Vice President in 1988. In 1999, he left Belden & Blake Corporation to assist early stage companies with the development of business plans and capital formation. In July 2001, he became the General Counsel and Secretary of North Coast Energy, Inc., in Twinsburg, Ohio, and worked there until August 2005. He practiced privately in 2006 until he became General Counsel of Aurora Oil & Gas Corporation in Traverse City, Michigan, where he worked until July 2008. Since 2008, he has practiced privately, working primarily with clients in the oil and gas industry.

Dean is a member of the Ohio Oil & Gas Association, the Ohio Bar Association, and the Stark County Bar Association.

He has been a speaker for the Eastern Mineral Law Foundation, Petroleum Development Institute, Ohio State Bar Association, and American Association of Petroleum Landmen.
