Overview

Wood Herron & Evans has lost a beloved partner, colleague, mentor, and friend. Greg Ahrens was—and will always remain—a stalwart of our firm.

Over the past weeks, we have mourned his passing while also celebrating the privilege of having known him. As a firm, we recently gathered to share memories and reflect on the extraordinary impact Greg had on all of us. We offer a few of those reflections here.

Greg was, quite simply, someone who drew people in. Many of us recall being instantly charmed by him—his warmth, his presence, and his genuine interest in others. He had a rare ability to make people feel welcome, valued, and reassured. In moments of uncertainty, Greg was the calm in the storm—his steady voice, thoughtful guidance, and unshakable confidence reminding clients and colleagues alike that “we’ve got this.”

A nationally recognized patent litigator, Greg devoted more than 40 years to fiercely advocating for his clients. He practiced in a high-stakes arena where fortunes, innovations, and futures hung in the balance—and he met that responsibility with brilliance, integrity, and grace. He was respected not only by those who stood beside him, but also by those across the courtroom. Though Greg earned the distinction of Super Lawyer and Best Lawyer, those titles only begin to capture who he was. To us—and to so many others—he was a truly exceptional lawyer in every sense: steadfast, principled, and deeply human.

Within the firm, Greg was a partner in every sense of the word. A leader and a confidant, he gave selflessly of his time and energy to many facets of the firm. Colleagues leaned on him and trusted him implicitly. He took pride in mentoring others; he didn’t simply meet people—he built relationships. Colleagues became friends, clients became family, and strangers became welcome guests.

Greg’s enthusiasm for life was unmistakable. Whether recalling his legendary rugby days, answering the call to help those in need, or sharing a laugh in the hallway, he lived fully and generously. His faith was evident not in words, but in the way he treated people—with kindness, patience, and humility. His love for his family was quiet, steady, and profound—a constant foundation throughout his life.

Greg’s presence—both personal and professional—will be deeply missed. We are better for having known him, for having worked alongside him, and for having called him our friend.

Highlights of Greg’s Career:

With nearly four decades of experience in intellectual property law, Greg focused his practice on IP litigation, representing clients in complex disputes across the country. He handled numerous cases through jury trials, appeals, and in proceedings before the PTAB and the ITC. His litigation work spanned federal to state courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and various Ohio state courts.

In addition to his trial work, Greg oversaw attorneys across all facets of the firm’s IP practice, particularly emphasizing the chemical arts. He was admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the United States Supreme Court along with numerous federal district courts around the U.S.

Greg was recognized as Best Lawyers’ “Lawyer of the Year” for IP/Patent Litigation in Cincinnati in 2018, 2021, 2024, and 2026. He also served the profession as a Past President of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
