Hired Law firm 2021Hired Matt Yourkvitch via email to help me with a property line dispute and water damage to my house from the neighboring newly installed driveway expansion. I had a letter from my neighbor’s Attorney asserting her rights to my fence. I sent all survey documents and photos. After several months and no communication despite my attempts to set up a call, I had a conversation with the attorney who was assigned my case. Atty Scott told me it would cost over $10K to pursue my property line, but the water damage I was experiencing may be worth pursuing. I received a bill for over $500 and Scott and I exchanged emails about the photos I sent. Finally Scott emailed me after no contact for several weeks and told me to take more photos that minute in the middle of a snow shower without saying why. When I refused take more photos and expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of progress or communication, Matt got involved again and offered to drop me as a client. I accepted. I had to email again a week later to request a refund of my retainer and the documents I sent. Then Scott forgot to include the letter from the neighbor’s Attorney, which was why I hired him in the first place, so I had to contact him again. Total waste of money, very unprofessional, and never helped me with defending my property against my neighbor’s lawyer. I wish I never hired this firm.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
