Overview
Leveraging Decades of Experience and a Competitive Drive to Win Cases for Injured Workers
A veteran workers’ compensation attorney with rich experience representing both injured workers and employers, Brad Howenstein brings forth a lifetime of victories and a breadth of knowledge to which few can lay claim. Brad has become well-versed in every facet of workers’ comp law with his on-going service of injured workers and his previous time spent representing the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, the Industrial Commission of Ohio, and private employers. Brad’s diverse background gives him an edge and has made him one of Ohio’s best-ranked workers’ comp attorneys.
Building on Decades of Legal Experience to Win Cases for Clients
“I try to approach each claim with the eye of a tactician,” Brad said when asked how he handles workers’ comp cases. “I evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each claim from every perspective to map out the best path for success for our clients.” Brad’s methodology works. Supported by the immense resources and hands-on ethos of the NRS Injury Law team, Brad has zealously represented injured workers in over 1,200 hearings annually before the Industrial Commission of Ohio since joining the firm in 2015.
Brad is a results-driven attorney who cares deeply about securing benefits for his clients. He has argued over 100 workers’ compensation cases before the Ohio Supreme Court and Tenth District Court of Appeals, and he has prevailed in nearly two dozen workers’ compensation jury trials throughout Ohio with one of the highest winning percentages in the State. Brad has practiced law since 1991 and has an AVVO rating of 8.7/10 (i.e., Excellent).
Making Ohio a Safer Place for Workers
The mandamus cases Brad is involved in with the Tenth District Court of Appeals and the Ohio Supreme Court help shape the laws that affect injured workers. Each mandamus victory secures benefits for that client and makes it easier for clients throughout Ohio to obtain the benefits they are entitled to receive.
Since he was a teenager, Brad knew he wanted to help others as an attorney. A moot court class in 10th grade along with classic legal movies peaked his interest in law, and since Brad has never shied away from hard work, he quickly became familiar with the field by clerking for four law firms while attending law school. During his early years as an attorney, Brad worked a series of service jobs in the evenings.
Some of Brad’s greatest strengths include his background working as Ohio’s Assistant Attorney General and his time spent representing private businesses, the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, and the Industrial Commission of Ohio. “I started representing injured workers in 2014, and it has become my passion work,” says Brad. “But the time I spent before that representing the State and private companies gave me a deep understanding of how the defense council operates in workers’ comp cases. Your best arguments are made when you understand the opposition. Understanding the folks across the aisle gives me an edge in securing compensation for our clients.”
Community Involvement
A legal career spent representing injured workers is all about service to the community, and Brad takes that mission to heart. When he’s not wearing his hat as a workers’ comp attorney, he can often be found participating in the firm’s charitable events, including volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House, helping out at food pantries, and participating in the firm’s annual community turkey giveaway. A good neighbor to his Dublin, Ohio community, Brad has also coached local sports teams, including his son’s football, baseball, and basketball teams.
Work/Life Balance
When he’s not working, Brad enjoys hiking, fishing, and gardening with his partner. He is a proud Buckeye football and Cardinals baseball fan (having grown up in St. Louis). He enjoys watching games with his dog Rudy. During the spring months, Brad can be found scouring farm fields searching for arrowheads to add to his growing collection.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
