Drawing on Decades of Experience in Multiple Practice Areas to Secure Benefits for Clients

Joseph Gibson has practiced law for decades, working in many fields and holding several positions. Today, he leverages an unmatched arsenal of legal strategy while serving NRS Injury Law clients at the firm’s Dayton office.

A Storied Legal Career Directed at Helping Injured Workers Secure Benefits

Few attorneys can claim to have worked in as many legal fields as Joe Gibson, but his career didn’t start with law. “I cut grass and did landscaping in college and even law school in the 1970s and 1980s,” says Joe. “It started with my uncle’s yard. Before I knew it, I was cutting lawns across the neighborhood.” A Middletown, Ohio native, Joe’s working-class roots brought him to workers’ comp law when he joined NRS Injury Law in August 2023.

But there were many rungs in Joe’s career ladder between cutting grass as a teenager and joining this firm. Joe worked as a legal assistant, paralegal, and law clerk before and during law school at the University of Dayton School of Law. After passing the bar in 1990, Joe worked both corporate law (Dap Incorporated) and government law (Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Air Force Logistics Command).

After his stint at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Joe launched his law firm in 1994 serving defense clients, plaintiff clients, and the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC). Joe was later appointed District Hearing Officer for the BWC, where he presided over workers’ compensation hearings.

“Some lawyers can say they’ve served clients on both sides of the table,” says Joe, referring to plaintiff and defense legal work. “At various stages of my career, I’ve sat on ALL sides of the table, and believe me, there are more than two sides. My experience as plaintiff’s attorney, defense attorney, BWC attorney, and District Hearing Officer gives me a unique understanding of workers’ compensation law, an understanding I leverage in winning cases for my clients.”

A Willingness to Fight; A Commitment to Inform

“Clients want two things from their attorneys,” Joe said, shifting the conversation to his role at NRS Injury Law. “One, they want you to fight for them. Two, they want you to inform them.”

For Joe, the first is a given and an area where he’s proven himself in securing client results. But the second is an area where he stands out. “Not all attorneys take the time to inform their clients,” Joe says. “But I do. My goal is to serve and advise my clients so they have an understanding of what’s going on and so we can secure benefits and compensation together.”

According to Joe, informing clients and bringing them into the team approach NRS Injury Law has created is incredibly beneficial and puts the firm in a better position to win for the client. “In my decades, I’ve seen every type of case there is,” Joe concluded. “And while your strategy based on the case in front of you may differ from one case to the next, it is a universal truth that an informed client and a teamwork-approach significantly increase your odds for success. This is especially true in workers’ comp cases, where the fast-paced nature of the case requires all of us to be on the same page.”

Bolstered by the unprecedented resources provided by NRS Injury Law, the largest workers’ compensation law firm in Ohio, Joe brings his clients into the fold, informs them, fights for them, and helps them win.

Work/Life Balance

Joe stays busy in the office and outside of it. When he’s not representing NRS Injury Law clients, he can be found playing tennis or golf. He also jogs and bicycles on local trails. Joe is an avid chess player, a hobby he’s had for multiple decades and one he credits with boosting his legal abilities in strategy, prediction, and human psychology. Joe lives in Tipp City with his wife, Sonia. They have two daughters together.

“I take a lot of pride in helping injured workers be made whole,” Joe said in closing. “Yet my greatest achievements in life are those girls. They grew up watching me help others in my legal profession and they loved me for it. Now, they’re both in professions where they help others and they volunteer at homeless and immigration shelters. No accomplishment is more rewarding or humbling than the fact that they still see me as a role model.”

Community Impact

Outside the law office, Joe has served his community in many ways. At law school, Joe served as the president of the Commuter Students Association. More recently, Joe became deeply involved in civil service through multiple elected positions, including City Council, City Council President, and City Mayor. He also served on the City Planning Board and the Cable Access Commission. Joe has taught political science and legal studies at Sinclair Community College in Dayton and Edison State Community College, where he encouraged students to get involved in local and state government. Joe participates in food drives, volunteers at shelters, and helps his wife’s organization in employment and family services.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
