Attorney Information

Overview

Matthew proudly hails from a blue-collar steel mill town in West Virginia, a community shaped by hard work, resilience, and integrity. Growing up among people who devoted their lives to earning an honest living, he understands the value of protecting what individuals and families have worked so hard to build. Having witnessed the toll that nursing home and long-term care costs can take on a lifetime of savings, Matthew finds it deeply rewarding to help clients preserve their assets and secure peace of mind for the future.

Before joining Hickman Lowder, Matthew practiced at Rokisky, McCune, Wilharm, Blair & Risovich in Weirton, West Virginia. There, he managed a wide range of client legal matters in estate planning, probate, and elder law. His work included drafting wills, trusts, and powers of attorney; advising clients on Medicaid eligibility; and developing strategies—such as Medicaid Asset Protection Trusts—to help clients qualify for long-term care benefits while protecting their assets. Part of Matthew’s practice also involved negotiating oil and gas leases on behalf of landowners. He coordinated estate administrations to ensure that mineral rights and leases were properly transferred to beneficiaries, allowing payments to flow to the correct recipients. This experience gives him unique insight into estate planning for clients who own mineral rights or receive royalty income.

Matthew earned both his Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration from the University of Toledo, where he attended the College of Law and the College of Business and Innovation. He believes that his dual degrees provide a strong foundation for understanding the financial and legal aspects of each client’s unique situation.

Now a resident of the greater Cleveland area, Matthew is enjoying all that Northeast Ohio has to offer. In his free time, he loves being outdoors, playing golf, and traveling.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
