Overview
Steven Schoenfeld grew up in Queens, NY. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Boston University, graduating in 1986 with honors. He obtained his law degree from St. Johns University in New York City, graduating in 1989. While at St. Johns, he was a regular contributor to the law school newspaper. Also, during law school Mr. Schoenfeld clerked in several local New York law firms, learning the ropes and learning how to litigate cases.
While in law school, Steven met his future wife and law partner to be, Karen, and they moved to Portland, Oregon in 1990. Once in Oregon, Steven began working on personal injury cases and workers' compensation cases for another firm. After approximately one year he set out on his own litigating personal injury and workers' compensation cases.
Since approximately 1990, Mr. Schoenfeld has been specializing in these types of cases. In approximately 1995 his practice became more focused on workers' compensation and employment discrimination cases. At this point, Mr. Schoenfeld has tried well over 1000 workers compensation cases, as he has represented hundreds of clients every year since 1995.
Mr. Schoenfeld is active in the Oregon Bar Association. He is a member of the President's Circle of the Oregon Trial Lawyers Association. He is a recently appointed member of the Executive Committee of the Workers' Compensation Section of the Oregon State Bar. He also is a member of the Access to Justice Committee, which advises the State of Oregon and its agencies on providing access to justice to immigrants and minorities.
Mr. Schoenfeld has authored several publications dealing with Oregon workers' compensation laws. He has been a featured speaker at legal seminars for both lawyers and judges dealing with issues relating to workers' compensation.
When not practicing law, Mr. Schoenfeld enjoys playing music with his band of middle aged rock-n-rollers, hiking, cycling, backpacking and skiing steep slopes in Oregon.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
