Attorney Information
Overview
Jane Paulson is a 1990 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law. She began her courtroom career as a clerk for a federal judge, the Honorable James M. Burns, in Portland. After clerking, she worked over three years at a well-regarded defense firm where she gained invaluable firsthand knowledge of practices and legal strategies of insurance companies and their defense teams.
A born competitor, Jane attended college on a tennis scholarship. In her first jury trial after becoming a plaintiff's lawyer, she won a verdict over $900,000 on a no-offer personal injury case against a national retailer.
Jane had the honor of serving on the Oregon Trial Lawyers Board 1995-2006, was one of Oregon's two American Trial Lawyer Association Delegates 2000-2004, and was President of OTLA 2004-2005. She is an Associate in the American Board of Trial Advocates and is listed in Best Lawyers in America.
She has also served on the Oregon Law Institute Board and several local and state bar committees including the Oregon State Bar Affirmative Action Committee, the Oregon State Bar Procedure and Practice Committee and the Multnomah Bar Association Judicial Screening Committee. Jane is listed as one of the Best Lawyers in America; an Oregon Super Lawyer, one of Oregon's Top 25 Women Super Lawyers and one of Portland's Best Lawyers in Portland Monthly magazine.
Jane, like all the lawyers in our firm, believes in giving back. She works with and is a Board member of Portland Habitat for Humanity.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.
How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
