Attorney Information
Overview
John Gilroy is a founding partner of Gilroy Napoli Short, LLC, where he represents individuals facing serious criminal charges, DUI offenses, and personal injury claims throughout Oregon. With extensive courtroom experience and a background in prosecution, John brings strategic insight and trial-tested advocacy to every case he handles.
Before co-founding the firm, John served as a Deputy District Attorney with the Washington County District Attorney’s Office, one of the largest and most active prosecutor’s offices in the state. In that role, he handled a broad spectrum of cases, including misdemeanors, DUII offenses, and major felony prosecutions. His firsthand experience evaluating evidence, preparing cases for trial, and negotiating resolutions on behalf of the state gives him a unique advantage when defending clients in criminal court. Today, he leverages that prosecutorial background to anticipate the strategies of the opposing side and build strong, results-driven defense strategies.
John’s legal skill and commitment to client advocacy have earned him consistent professional recognition. He has been selected as an Oregon Super Lawyer for five consecutive years, a distinction awarded to attorneys who demonstrate a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. In 2014, he was also invited to join The National Trial Lawyers Top 100 Trial Lawyers, an honor reserved for attorneys who exhibit superior qualifications, trial results, and leadership in the legal community. These distinctions reflect his reputation for excellence in criminal defense litigation and trial advocacy.
Education and Early CareerJohn received his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Santa Clara University in 1993. He later earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1998. Prior to attending law school, he worked in Washington, D.C. as a legislative aide for Robert Packwood, gaining valuable experience in government and public policy.
Deep Oregon RootsBorn and raised in the Portland metropolitan area, John comes from a family with a strong legal tradition. He is the son of the late Patrick D. Gilroy, who served as a respected judge on the Clackamas County Circuit Court. Growing up in a household grounded in public service and the rule of law influenced John’s commitment to justice and ethical advocacy. Two of his brothers also practice law in the Portland metro area, continuing the family’s longstanding involvement in the Oregon legal community.
Commitment Beyond the CourtroomOutside of his practice, John prioritizes time with his wife and five children. He enjoys golf, skiing, and fishing, as well as basketball, hiking, and camping throughout the Pacific Northwest. His connection to the local community strengthens his dedication to protecting the rights and futures of the individuals and families he represents.
