Attorney Information

Overview

Merrill is an experienced and dynamic business and technology attorney, with a legal career spanning over three decades in Oregon, California, and abroad. His experience in representing local and international clients, in such varied industries as technology, software, gaming, manufacturing, consumer and food products, and distribution, has given him a breadth of experience and expertise that is unique in Portland. His representation of tech and creative clients includes substantial intellectual property work, from structuring complex licensing transactions to protection of ideas, creative works, and brands, with trademark and copyright strategies and prosecution of infringers of his clients’ valuable IP assets. Merrill has worked on and led M+A transactions in a myriad of industries, and with transaction values as high as $1 billion. He has represented corporate clients regarding climate change regulations and opportunities and has handled numerous greenhouse gas offset purchases and sales.

Prior to relocating to Oregon, Merrill was posted to his California firm’s Tokyo office, where he represented multinational corporations in international finance, distribution, and M+A transactions. In addition to representing private clients, Merrill had the honor to serve as general counsel to his prior firm in California, responsible for overseeing and budgeting the firm’s legal matters.

Outside the office, Merrill enjoys cycling and visits with family in New York City and South Africa. Merrill is also a passionate supporter the arts, as a frequent board member for Oregon arts organizations, and a member of an 80+ member choral group in the Portland area. He also interviews ambitious high school students in their pursuit of attending his own alma mater, Dartmouth College.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
