Michael Helock - Portland, OR

Michael Helock is dedicated to helping people through some of the most stressful and vulnerable moments of their lives. He believes that every person deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect—especially when they’re facing the weight of the criminal justice system. His practice is rooted in a client-centered, trauma-informed approach that focuses on meeting people where they are and guiding them forward with clarity and care.

Before joining the Reynolds Defense Firm, Michael built his career in public defense in Lane County, where he handled a full range of misdemeanor and felony cases from arraignment through resolution. His work frequently involved clients navigating mental health challenges, and he developed a reputation for being patient, steady, and deeply committed to each client’s unique circumstances. He prides himself on building genuine trust—something he sees as essential to effective advocacy and meaningful outcomes.

Michael’s perspective is also shaped by his experience working inside the Lane County Circuit Court as a judicial clerk. That behind-the-bench experience gave Michael a practical understanding of how judges make decisions, how cases move through the system, and what strategies are most persuasive in the courtroom.

His commitment to public service began before law school, interning at a public defense office in Florida. This experience solidified his passion for criminal defense, and while earning his law degree from the University of Oregon School of Law, Michael represented clients through the Criminal Defense Clinic and clerked for Legal Aid Services of Oregon.

Michael brings a thoughtful, grounded presence to his cases. He works hard not only to advocate for strong legal results but also to help clients feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout the process. He knows that a person’s hardest moment should never define their future, and he takes pride in standing beside clients as they move toward better days.

Outside of work, Michael enjoys playing golf, exploring his love of photography and videography, cooking, and attending concerts. He plays the guitar and often unwinds through skateboarding, snowboarding, and mindfulness practice. He also continues to give back through volunteer expungement clinics and community legal service projects.
