Overview
Sawyer Burton knows that behind every case is a person’s future—and he fights relentlessly to protect it while guiding clients with compassion. At Morris Family Law LLC, Sawyer represents clients in divorce, custody, parenting time, child and spousal support matters, and protective orders. He also brings his extensive criminal defense background to the firm, defending clients facing misdemeanors, felonies, and DUII charges.
A seasoned litigator, Sawyer has built his career in the courtroom, standing up for clients in high-stakes situations. He began at Metropolitan Public Defender, where he earned a reputation for fearless advocacy while defending individuals with mental health challenges and those accused of serious criminal offenses. In private practice, he expanded into civil litigation and family law, blending his sharp trial skills with the understanding and sensitivity that family law clients need most.
Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Sawyer earned his undergraduate degree at Hampshire College and pursued graduate research in Hefei, China, where he studied the effects of pesticides on honey bees and became fluent in Mandarin Chinese. He went on to graduate cum laude from Vermont Law School, where he served on the Law Review.
Now admitted to practice in Oregon, Arizona, and the Federal District of Oregon, Sawyer is known for his clear communication, steady guidance, and unwavering dedication. Whether helping a parent fight for time with their child or defending someone against a life-altering charge, Sawyer’s clients know they have an advocate who will listen, stand with them, and fight tirelessly for their future.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
