Consulted Attorney 2019I contacted/consulted with Mr. Heym’s office in November 2019. His secretary and I spoke twice about my case. I was made aware of his retainer fee and I passed on retaining him as I could not afford it. One month later the opposing party (my husband) hired Mr. Heym. Mr. Heym has actively represented my husband since December. I believe this to be a conflict of interest as he consulted with me first.

Hired Attorney 2013-2020When I met Jason Heym, I was at my wits end and needed a divorce. Jason was patient, understanding and undeniably competent. Divorce is such a personal and emotional problem but Jason handled everything expertly and with the empathy that put all my fears and reservations to rest. When it was difficult to know whom to trust I felt instinctively that I could trust Jason. Jason was exactly what I needed at a very difficult time in my life. I would recommend Jason Heym to anyone needing a family law expert. I suppose any lawyer can handle the paperwork but I felt Jason had the experience, competence and desire to get the results hoped for by his client. Every time I contacted Jason, I was comforted by his approach to problems and delighted by the results. Whenever I involved Jason I knew I could relax. That was my experience!

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
