Overview
Barbara N. Lyons, Esquire, is a certified, skilled and experienced lawyer specializing in neutral arbitration, mediation and case evaluation. She founded the Bucks County Mediation and Arbitration Center (BCMAC) to provide parties to disputes with alternatives to traditional litigation.
Through BCMAC, Ms. Lyons provides full-service Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) solutions for lawyers and their clients. Ms. Lyons addresses issues involving, but not limited to, contract and real estate disputes, equity matters, underinsured and uninsured motorist cases, personal injury, municipal, medical malpractice and employer/employee disputes, business mergers and dissolutions.
An attorney since 1981, Ms. Lyons is a former trial attorney representing both plaintiffs and defendants. This training provides her with a unique prospective on the resolution of legal matters – with a penchant for cutting through to the heart of the dispute. Ms. Lyons has been a dedicated neutral attorney since 1994 when she focused her practice in all methods of resolving disputes outside of the court system. Since establishing BCMAC, Ms. Lyons has resolved thousands of civil actions by mediation and arbitration.
Ms. Lyons is admitted to practice law in the Courts for the County of Bucks, Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. She is a court appointed arbitrator, mediator and judge pro tem in over 3,000 cases for the Bucks County Mortgage Foreclosure Program, a program she helped create for the court system in 2009. Just before founding BCMAC in 1994, Ms. Lyons taught peer mediation to middle school children in Bucks County and decided to bring her unique talents to the legal community.
Ms. Lyons is a member of the Senate Advisory Commission on Alternative Dispute Resolution and serves on the ABA Advanced Mediation Institute faculty. She works to create systems of alternative dispute resolution throughout the Commonwealth. In March 2013, Ms. Lyons was appointed to the Joint State Government Commission’s Advisory Committee on Violence Prevention. This advisory committee assisted the Commission in researching and drafting violence prevention recommendations to the State General Assembly.
An active member of the legal community, Ms. Lyons has served multiple terms as a Director for the Bucks County Bar Association. She was the founder and editor of the Bucks County Bar Association newsletter, "The Writs," for the Bar Association, a member of the Women's Law Division, and has served as a Trustee to the Charitable Foundation for the Bucks County Bar Association and as a Fellow to the American Bar Association. Ms. Lyons also serves the greater community as a member of the Board of Supervisors for Doylestown Township, a position she has been elected to four times since 2002 and served as Chairman of the Board for over 15 years. Prior to her position on the Board of Supervisors, she served as Chairman of Doylestown Township’s Park and Recreation Board.
Ms. Lyons chairs the Annual Doylestown Township Golf Outing and is the past chair of the Township’s annual Oktoberfest. She has volunteered her time and talents to numerous organizations and has provided pro bono legal representation to abused women and their children for over three decades for which she was recognized by the Pennsylvania Bar Association Pro Bono Award. She received the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce VIA Women in Business Leadership Award in 2013, in recognition of her outstanding leadership in the Central Bucks community.
From 1992 to 1995, Ms. Lyons served as the Director of A Woman’s Place, a shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children and as President of the Board of CB Cares Educational Foundation, a non-profit organization that works as a coalition with community leaders, agencies, businesses, schools and families for the purpose of helping to grow a healthier youth. Ms. Lyons also demonstrates her commitment to the community as a counsellor to women and families in transition.
Ms. Lyons earned her B.A. summa cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh and her J.D. in 1981 from Temple University School of Law. She is a frequent, dynamic lecturer at high schools and universities.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
