Matthew David Areman - Philadelphia, PA

Mr. Areman is a partner at Markowitz and Richman, where he represents public and private sector labor unions, benefit funds, and individual employees. His practice encompasses a broad range of labor and employment matters, with particular experience in grievance and interest arbitration, unfair labor practices, disciplinary proceedings, civil rights litigation, pension disputes, ERISA matters, and workers’ compensation.

Mr. Areman represents employees and their unions in public safety, healthcare, construction, trucking, oil refining, and the service industry. Mr. Areman also serves as Labor Counsel to the New Jersey State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Pennsylvania State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Fraternal Order of Police, New Jersey Labor Council. Drawing on his extensive experience, Mr. Areman provides skilled and effective representation in litigation, arbitration, collective bargaining, and resolution of a wide range of workplace disputes.

Mr. Areman is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, as well as before the United States District Courts for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the District of New Jersey and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Before joining Markowitz and Richman, Mr. Areman served as a National Negotiator for the National Treasury Employees Union in Washington, D.C. Earlier in his career, he worked in the legal departments of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the American Federation of Teachers, also in Washington, D.C. These positions provided him with substantial experience representing organized labor and negotiating on behalf of employees in a variety of industries and workplaces.

Mr. Areman earned his undergraduate degree from Hamilton College in 1996 and his law degree from The George Washington University National Law Center in 2003.

Beyond his legal practice, Mr. Areman is actively involved in his community as a volunteer in his neighborhood and with local youth sports. In November 2019, he was elected to serve on the Cheltenham Township Board of Commissioners.
